This highly controversial and grotesque psychodrama from Danish auteur Lars von Trier ('Dogville', 'The Idiots') charts the degeneration of a marriage into apocalyptic violence, chaos, and insanity following an unthinkable domestic tragedy.
Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg play characters known only as He and She, whose lives are shattered when their toddler falls to his death from their apartment window due to their insufficient supervision of him.
As they try to grapple with the emotional fallout of the tragedy they retreat to their cabin in the woods in order to grieve and heal in solitude. At first all seems to go well and their sadness begins to ebb. However, She soon begins behaving irrationally and the situation takes a turn for the worst.
Now, as She regresses into unbridled insanity, she carries out gruesome acts of destruction against herself and against He, which culminates in an apocalyptic climax.
