From director Michael Haneke ('Funny Games', 'The Piano Player') comes this much-acclaimed German-language drama, shot in black and white, which was the winner of the coveted Palme D'Or at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, 2009 Golden Globe Foreign Film winner, and a nominee for Best Foreign Film at the 2009 Oscars.
The story is set in a Protestant northern German village in the months preceding WWI. The local schoolteacher and his students and their families experience a series of bizarre incidents that inexplicably assume all the hallmarks of a punishment ritual.
But punishment for what; and by whom? This is the biggest mystery of them all. As the worries and the dramas of the village are twinned with the strange excitement of the coming war, the schoolteacher begins to get to the bottom of the mystery, but when he discovers the truth, even he cannot believe it.
